What is a Core Barrel?
A core barrel is a heavy-duty cylindrical drilling tool used with hydraulic rotary piling rigs to cut through hard strata such as rock, boulders, and dense soil during deep foundation and pile-boring work. Fitted to the Kelly bar of a piling rig, the core barrel rotates under high torque and downward crowd force to grind an annular groove into the ground, isolating a solid core of material that can then be extracted with a rock auger or bucket. Core barrels are essential when the piling rig encounters strata that standard augers or drilling buckets cannot penetrate.
At Metalix Engineering, we manufacture core barrels in a wide range of diameters (500 mm to 2,000 mm) and lengths, engineered with wear-resistant cutting elements to deliver long tool life on Indian project sites.
Types of Core Barrels We Manufacture
Rock Core Barrels with Roller Bits
Designed for hard rock formations — granite, basalt, sandstone, and weathered rock. The roller bits crush and grind rock as the barrel rotates. Ideal for deep foundation work in metro projects, bridges, and high-rise piling.
Soil Core Barrels with Bullet Teeth / Round-Shank Picks
Fitted with tungsten-carbide bullet teeth in a round-shank holder configuration. Suited for cemented soils, hard clay, weathered rock, and mixed strata. Bullet teeth are replaceable, keeping running costs low.
Double-Wall Core Barrels
Twin-shell design with an inner and outer wall. The outer barrel cuts while the inner sleeve protects and retrieves the intact core. Preferred for geotechnical investigation and where sample recovery matters.
Heavy-Duty Core Barrels
Reinforced construction with extra wall thickness for use on high-torque rigs (Bauer, Soilmec, IMT, Sany, XCMG, and comparable machines) working on demanding infrastructure sites.

Our Manufacturing & Quality Process
Each core barrel is built from high-tensile alloy steel, heat-treated for hardness, and precision-machined to ensure concentricity with the Kelly bar. Cutting elements are welded or bolted in position with a tested procedure, and every unit is inspected for weld integrity, dimensional accuracy, and rotational balance before dispatch. This ensures the barrel runs true under load and delivers a long service life on site.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q1. What is a core barrel used for in piling?
A core barrel is used with a hydraulic rotary piling rig to cut through hard rock, boulders, and dense strata that standard augers or drilling buckets cannot penetrate. It creates an annular cut, isolating a rock core that can then be broken and removed.
Q2. What is the difference between a rock core barrel and a soil core barrel?
A rock core barrel is fitted with roller bits designed to crush hard rock like granite or basalt. A soil core barrel uses bullet teeth or round-shank picks and is suited to weathered rock, cemented soil, and hard clay.
Q3. What diameters are available?
Metalix Engineering manufactures core barrels from 500 mm up to 2,000 mm outer diameter. Custom diameters can be produced on request.
Q4. Which piling rigs are these core barrels compatible with?
Our core barrels are compatible with all major hydraulic rotary piling rigs including Bauer, Soilmec, IMT, Sany, XCMG, and Casagrande. We match the Kelly-bar interface (friction or interlocking) to your specific rig.
Q5. Do you deliver core barrels across India?
Yes. We are based in Kolkata and deliver pan-India — including Maharashtra, Delhi NCR, Gujarat, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, and the North-East. Contact us with your project location for delivery timelines.
Q6. Can bullet teeth and roller bits be replaced?
Yes. Both bullet teeth (with their holders and lock-pins) and roller bits are field-replaceable. We supply spares as consumables.
